It is important to have the correct supplies for winter camping, as this is can, at times, have a level of danger not present at other times of the year. Don't add too many items that add to the weight of the backpack or you will tire out quickly.
By travelling around, you can tour and learn more about different parts of the country. My favorite place to hike is the Rocky Mountains. However, even in familiar areas you could just as easily get lost and you never know the quality of the printing on the maps, so do not risk getting the maps washed or smudged by rain or moisture.
Dressing warmly is obviously a major issue. Some flashlights do not through a very strong light and they are subject to going out in a breeze. Make sure to bring a sleeping bag that is made to withstand the deep freeze of winter.
Camping is the perfect opportunity to do some star gazing. Sit back in your folding chair and watch the squirrels jump from branch to branch.
